This brass tone humidity "mold" detector is called a hygrometer. Our hygrometer has the "easymag" magnetic mount that allows you to easily mount and monitor different areas of the home. It will let you know if there are levels of moisture in your home that will permit the growth of mold. Place this detector in potentially damp places such as basement, attics, washrooms, bathrooms and other areas where high humidity may be present. Larger units can be bought at Radio Shack or Home Depot for non scientific purposes. The ideal range is between 30-50 % RH. Continued and sustained levels above 60-70% will allow opportunistic mold to grow on furniture, carpeting, sheet rock, wood, leather and any other surfaces visible or concealed that is open to this humidity in as little as 48 hours. Mold will also grow on clothing and furniture. Mold on leather items are especially DANGEROUS and INFECTIOUS and must be avoided . When you detect mold odor you are smelling organic gases given from mold growth and or are actually inhaling mold fragments or spores. Spores are the seeds of molds. Some of the spores have the ability to germinate on and grow into skin (dermatophytes ), nails, hair and inside your body including the heart, kidney, lungs and brain of both animals and humans. Increased itching, sneezing, watery eyes in a particular area of the house may be a warning that a mold has started to grow and their spores and toxins are present. Ask your doctor (immunologist, dermatologist or allergist ) for more information if any new conditions have developed. |
